29.10.06 Andrew Johnson
Indie-pop star Andy Johnson launches his excellent 5th album; A New Star, and delivers a stunning party set of wonderfully reworked pop classics.
Andy Johnson, Simon and Mackie were installed as the unofficial Waiting for Sunday House Band for one or two gigs last year, which was an unofficial tribute to them for delivering some of the greatest table-banging singalong nights we’ve had. Andy writes great songs, produces great albums from his bedroom, and delivers brilliant performances taking his audience on a playful pop odyssey. Although from a good old fashioned art school indie singer/songwriter tradition - akin to somebody like Blur’s Albarn - Andy Johnson is tirelessly experimental and A New Star never stands still, from loopy-folk-dub to Daft Punky electronics and dirty funk through grand piano ballads and a stomping Waterboys-esque ending it draws the listener along, at times tugging heart strings, but equally tugging shirts to get the wearer of the shirt up to dance.
