23.10.11 ‘Bon Soir Brassens’ A celebration of the life and songs of Georges Brassens
Georges Brassens (1921-1981) was known as ‘the man with the famous moustache’. Brassens was one of France’s biggest stars and he was also one of the greatest singers of all time. Brassens wrote and sang songs in the chanson tradition, combining sparse but harmonically complex music with words which were poetic, satirical and lyrical. Brassens was an anarchist and a libertine who despised hypocrisy and any form of oppression of individual freedom or desire. His lyrics are now studied in French schools. Brassens is little know in the UK but his hardcore fans have included singers Jake Thackray and Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) and writer Julian Barnes. This evening presents a tribute to Brassens in the anniversary year of both his birth and his death and includes:
Projet Brassens who are the foremost UK exponents of Brassens’ songs.
Local group Rudolf Rocker who have adapted Brassens songs from LanguedocRoussillon to the North East Coast of England.
Legendary DJ/singer Bob Fischer who will perform Brassens in the style of Jake Thackray.
Rare screenings of Brassens in live performance.
Tickets for the show are £9.
Tickets including a delightful french-themed dinner, (including Fondue and Gougere (and much more) are £24.
