27.03.11 Pete David & The Payroll Union + TBC
Pete David & The Payroll Union formed over a love of both old bluegrass records and the contemporary altcountry scene. Nashville country, tex-mex, Southern Gothic, rockabilly, field hollers and chain gang songs are all served up as the band plough through American musical traditions with a clear love of its richness and diversity.
One live reviewer summed the band up perfectly when he said; "The songs are peppered with exhortations to the Lord, whisky, hanging, heartbreak and evil deeds. Pete's vocal delivery veers from hushed whispers to impassioned sermons and, similarly, the music changes on a dime from reverential faithfolk to uptempo secular hoedown and back again."
Pete's lyrics burrow as fervently through American political and social history as do the songs through its musical history. Songs take in the vast carnage of 19th Century American warfare through the eyes of horse-thieves, lawyers and Presidents.
Their debut EP, Underfed and Underpaid, was produced by Bromheads’ frontman Tim Hampton. The band are releasing a free single every month from their website until its release in April.
