19.03.06 WfS Special lunch-night

Martin Furey

As part of our involvement in the Tees Valley Foodie Fest 2006, we are hosting a Waiting for Sunday Special on March 19th beginning with the exceptional jazz guitar of Paul Donnelly at lunch time, from 12.30 and including a performance by Canadian performance poet Dwayne Morgan during the afternoon and with a gig by Martin Fury in the evening, from 7.30pm please get in touch as the date nears to find out further specific information, additions to the programme etc.

Martin Furey writes oddly haunting songs already showcased in some style with Bohinta, the band he still fronts with his sister Aine, but here he takes a further step into the ethereal. Its not easy - the songs don't leap up and bite you - but there's something about his anguished voice, the percussive edge and spookily sparse arrangements that gets under your skin.

He combines deep knowledge of the Irish traveller tradition with an original and contemporary take on his singer/songwriter material. His vocal style has the resonance and ornamentation of the 19th century, yet the melodies and instrumentation are futuristic. A singer with the technique and the nerve to be right out in front.

AND.. He is an Actual Wild Cat actually from Kilkenny!
