The night will include poetry, song performances and film footage.

Ergo Phizmiz
The Third Police Man - Ergo Phizmiz  Sunday October 9th tickets £8

The Waiting Room is delighted to sponsor a new mind-warping operetta by the acclaimed musical absurdist Ergo Phizmiz. A steam-punk-neuropera on Flann O'Brien's absurdist masterpiece "The Third Policeman". Adapted, composed and directed by Ergo Phizmiz ("A musical equivalent to Chris Morris" - BBC Radio 3), and performed by a cast of non-opera singers including comedians, writers and musicians. The Third Policeman is a truly 21st century artwork, a steampunk odyssey through an absurdist hell.

Funny, disturbing, catchy and deeply in the spirit of Dada. Imagine an opera filtered through Frank Sidebottom and Vic Reeves, with music one-foot in Monteverdi and the other in Captain Beefheart.

THE THIRD POLICEMAN?
A classic of absurdist literature by Flann O'Brien. The story is very difficult to summarise, but concerns bicycles, policemen, wooden legs, hanging, pensioner murder, and a strange substance called Omnium. More detail on the novel can be found at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Third_Policeman

ERGO PHIZMIZ
Sonic explorer, experimentalist and wrongwriter, Ergo Phizmiz’s music jumps freely between pop, pranksterism, mutant-electro and just about everything in-between. Described by The Wire magazine as a “one man movement”, and by BBC Radio 3 as “one of the most inventive composers around…a musical equivalent to Chris Morris”, Ergo has developed a reputation as one of the most genuinely innovative composers working today.

Thomas Truax at The Waiting Room

Thomas Truax at The Waiting Room

Thomas Truax October 16th tickets £8

New York's Thomas Truax is a must see act with a wardrobe of highly accomplished original songs - and a garage full of whacky homemade intruments.

Georges Brassens
Bon Soir Brassens October 23rd tickets £9 or £24 including a delightful french-themed dinner

Georges Brassens (1921-1981) was known as ‘the man with the famous moustache’. Brassens was one of France’s biggest stars and he was also one of the greatest singers of all time. Brassens wrote and sang songs in the chanson tradition, combining sparse but harmonically complex music with words which were poetic, satirical and lyrical. Brassens was an anarchist and a libertine who despised hypocrisy and any form of oppression of individual freedom or desire. His lyrics are now studied in French schools. Brassens is little know in the UK but his hardcore fans have included singers Jake Thackray and Alex Kapranos (Franz Ferdinand) and writer Julian Barnes. This evening presents a tribu te to Brassens in the anniversary year of both his birth and his death and includes:

Projet Brassens who are the foremost UK exponents of Brassens’ songs.
Local group Rudolf Rocker who have adapted Brassens songs from LanguedocRoussillon to the North East Coast of England.
Legendary DJ/singer Bob Fischer who will perform Brassens in the style of Jake Thackray.
Rare screenings of Brassens in live performance.

Nov and December to follow soon... But here's a special preview announcement:

On November 27th The Matchbox Cabaret proudly presents:

MISTY'S BIG ADVENTURE!

Misty's Big Adventure at The Waiting Room

Misty's Big Adventure at The Waiting Room

MISTY'S BIG ADVENTURE ARE BACK! - an 8 piece band from Birmingham led by Grandmaster Gareth, who John Peel once pronounced "The New God". Since 2004, Misty's Big Adventure have released four studio albums to critical acclaim, with the NME calling their last album "a masterpiece". They have toured all over the UK with The Zutons, The Guillemots, The Magic Numbers and others as well as highlighting choice summer festivals over the past 7 years.

It must be 5 years since their last visit to The Waiting Room - a night that ranks in the top 1-3 of most people who were there.

Their latest album release The Family Amusement Centre is a serious work; A sprawl of sound with more hooks than a fishing tackle super store - looking to a post-consumerist world of village green preservation societies and less grumpy fun.

Patrick Moore features on the album - (presumably playing xylophone - (he's a virtuoso don't you know) - we fancied getting Patrick Moore to play a Matchbox Cabaret event one time - under the sky at night in the dark of our conservatory.

Sunday November 27th - Just £10
